Ik werd hier bediend door een meisje uit Rome. Floriana heet ze. Ik kreeg een prachtige huls van haar om mijn kaars van vorig jaar in op te bergen in de kleuren groen en scharlaken, met de Franse lelie van die oude familie

Het verrassingsgeschenk bevatte nog een aardigheidje: een ketting in de nieuwe kleur van de Baak. Die is dus voor jou. Namens Santa Claus. Ik heb ook nog een aangename discussie gevoerd met een Heer uit Brazilië. In het Portugees deze keer. Dat is dus taal nummer zeven. Sheila, die mij bediende kwam ook uit Kaapstad. Ik heb haar mijn brief van 13 november vorig jaar laten lezen. Het was haar duidelijk dat er geen twijfel mogelijk was over mijn relatie met Diana. Door haar kennis van het Afrikaans las zij ook uitstekend Nederlands. Zij noemde mij The Mysterious Man. Ik heb haar daarop geantwoord dat ik helemaal niet 'mysterious' ben. Wél dat Diana mijn Mysterious Girl was en dat daar een plaatje over gemaakt is. Tenslotte heb ik in de Underground nog even gesproken met de heer Muhammad Farooq Kasbati uit Karachi, Pakistan, die in mijn hotel logeert. Ik heb hem verteld dat een van zijn landgenoten, hartchirurg Hasnath Khan, mijn beoogde partner zeer ter wille is geweest in Stratford-upon-Avon en dat My Lady 'was very interested in heart surgery!'
